Character Journal:notwendydarling / notwendydarling Character Name: Wendy Moira Thorne (formerly Martin) Age/Birthday: 25 / January 8, 1985 Sexuality & Relationship Status: Straight / Divorced with one child Job: Elementary school music teacher How did they find Heritage Lake?: Used to come visit her grandmother here in the summer. Grandma passed away in April 2009; her mother inherited the house and it became a sanctuary for Wendy after her divorce. Once she got there, she never left.
Appearance: Blonde haired, brown-eyed Wendy Thorne is the dictionary definition of adorable. She usually wears her hair straight and long, and curls it for special occasions. Her makeup is generally simple; she doesn't feel the need to overwhelm her features with fake colors. She does like red lipstick, though. Years of braces have given her a bright smile with perfect straight teeth, and genetics gave her good cheekbones and a naturally thin figure. Her voice is light and pleasant, the kind of soft and inviting sound perfect for one who spends a lot of time with small children. The real power is in her singing voice, which can soar to great heights and flow through difficult passages with ease.
Personality: Knows people in town talk about her, the single mother from the big city. Tries to pretend it doesn't hurt. Fails as much as succeeds. * Is often described as adorable * Loves reality television * Perpetually perky * Is not prone to violence, but would kill to protect her daughter * Doesn't curse * Goes on lots of unsuccessful dates * Has trouble not sizing up each man she dates as a potential father to Kacie * Cries easily * Gets overwhelmed with stress, especially work-related, and is prone to fits of hand-wavey, monosyllabic freak-outs * Loves romantic movies * Plays the piano and sometimes composes * Calls her students "her kids" * Sometimes has moments where she'd rather talk to her students than to adults * Worries sometimes that her daughter thinks she loves her students more * Talks a lot when she's drunk, usually about nothing at all * Sings in the shower * Is a daddy's girl * Feels the hurt of her divorce very acutely when she's alone * Doesn't like to be alone * Feels like she has to be extra perfect for Kacie to make up for her not having a decent father * Has a weakness for creme brulee * Sometimes thinks of herself as the poster child for how much unprotected sex can screw up your life *
History: Was a cheerleader and a pageant queen. Talent? Singing; Wendy is a lyric coloratura. Attended a performing arts magnet program in high school, with desires to sing on the stages of all the famous opera houses. Graduated from a well-known undergraduate music program in May 2007. Stayed in the city for a while, waitressing and going on auditions. Met Benjamin Martin not long after graduation; he was dark and handsome and she fell in love almost immediately. Got married in November 2007 and divorced in May 2009.
Ex-husband Ben was a graphic designer who couldn't hold down a job (too young, too irresponsible); the closest he got was freelancing for small businesses in the area doing flyers, menus, etc. They got married mostly because she was pregnant, and daughter Kacie Ann Martin was born in February 2008. They were doing fine living off of their combined salaries until the baby was born. Ben wanted her to quit her job and be a stay at home mother, so she did. For a month their life was great; then things started to go downhill. Ben's lack of steady employment started to take its toll. Wendy started working part-time and stayed home with the baby the rest of the time. Neither of them made much money; they lived in a shithole apartment and barely made rent each month. They argued a lot about everything - money, employment (or Ben's lack thereof and his promise to her that she wouldn't have to go back to work full-time before Kacie was in school), her frustration with not being able to perform, their dangerous neighborhood, her refusal to ask her parents for help...you name it, they fought over it. Wendy finally ended it when she couldn't take it anymore; well, that and Ben cheated on her with an artist from the collective he belonged to. A pair of panties in a bag of art supplies and a matchbook from a hotel were all the proof she needed. It was over; Wendy was done. Packed her things and her daughter up one day while he was supposedly at work and moved to Heritage Lake, where she'd spent summers as a child. The divorce was not messy, mostly because they didn't have a lot to split up in the first place. Even the custody battle was nearly non-existant: full custody, with Kacey seeing her father every other weekend, two weeks twice a year, and a schedule of major holidays. Or at least, that's what it was supposed to be. Most of the time, Ben has some kind of excuse for not being able to see his daughter, which for Wendy is in equal parts a blessing and a curse.
In Heritage Lake, Wendy went back to her maiden name and took a position as an elementary music teacher even though she'd never really had any aspirations to teach; the position was open and came with a signing bonus, so she went with it. Turns out, she kind of likes it.
Fears: 1. That her daughter will never have a real father 2. That she'll never fall in love again 3. That she will become complacent and give up her dreams of performing
Desires: 1. To sing Panima in "The Magic Flute" with the Metropolitan Opera 2. To have more children 3. To understand why her life went so horribly wrong
One Secret: At a party her sophomore year in college, Wendy got drunk and had sex with another girl, an English major from another college in the city. They never saw each other after that night, but sometimes she wonders what her one-night stand is up to.
